Not fit for man nor beast....

Monday it snowed all day, I went to look for geese and hit rain 30 minutes South of me. On the plus side, I found geese in my late season field. The bad thing is, the landowner didn't get his backfield planted so all his deer are eating in the same field the geese are in. Since they are huge deer hunters, they don't want the shots scattering the deer. That being said I'm out my best late-season spot for this year.
Today is windy which really drops the temp with the windchill, stay home day.
Wednesday is more of the same if not worse, I've heard -45 windchill. I'll believe that when I see it, it is really hard to call yotes in that kind of wind.... I still might give 'er a try. Not sure yet what I'm going to do, but it may be another stay at home day.

CRAP........   😢😢😢: ( 😢😢😢

Called in Ed

Monday was suppose to be cold and sunny since the geese would more than likely sit all day I decided to dust off the FoxPro and try for a coyote. I left the house and headed south to pick up my Minion around 6:30 and finally got to the Salimonie a little after sunrise. We got out and started the day, we had plenty of sign at all my spots but at midday had yet to see a dog. We stopped at a spot that was new to me but looked coyoteee so we stopped and gave 'er a shot. After the 20 minute mark, I shut down the call and headed over to the trail to meet Sean. We walked up to the truck and started discussing the exceptional calling spot we just came from. We had all our gear loaded in the truck and I was just about to get in when I saw a coyote, albeit a very mangey coyote come out of the woods we just called. He was within 10 yards of us and when he saw us he just headed down the road. He wasn't in a hurry he just kinda sauntered away without a care in the world, and he really didn't, with 2 houses close to where we were there would be no shooting. We stayed at it pretty hard the rest of the day to no avail.
We headed home before sunset only because I wanted to see if I had geese in the fort.
Since I didn't have any geese and it was supposed to and did rain almost all of yesterday and all of today. I just took a couple days off to recoup.
We'll hit'er hard next week after the rain passes and the cooler weather comes back.
P.S.- Ed was the crazy hyena from The Lion King.

2 hour drive, 3 hour drive, score

I scouted FW after work on Sunday, I didn't find a field but the river was open. With nowhere else to go I hooked up the duck boat Monday morning and headed for the river. When I got there this is what I saw...
No hunting here today, turn around and go home. Scouted again Monday night and didn't find any geese so decided to go coyote hunting on Tues. Drove down to Huntington Tues. to do some coyote hunting, that really just turned into a walk with gear in the snow. nuff said there.
On the way home Tues. I scouted my fields and low and behold I had geese on a field.
I called the gang to get some more guns, everyone but my minion was busy. We got to the field before sunrise and got set up. It turned out to be a really nice day, temps were decent and the birds flew all day. We shot a couple birds early...
 including this one...
at least a 15-yard crash and burn

 then this happened....

In my defense here's the background: I was landing the close flock to try and get the further flocks, that didn't work. When the geese on the ground started taking off, I gave the call to take 'em. My buddy had a no-shoot zone to the right, that's why he didn't shoot. After all those geese we I only got one.

After kicking myself for the rest of the day, we stayed and finally ended up filling our limits.
Finally got on some geese this week, always happy to put some meat in the freezer. Monday it looks like I'll be doing some coyote hunting then hopefully some more goose....

guess what I've been thinking about....
Fishing season is only a short 2 months away.

try try try again...

I started off the week on a good note, went to one of my buddies properties on one of the windiest days of the week. We each walked away with a goose, our shell to goose ratio was also good. We had 2 singles come in so he shot the first one, one shot one kill. Then I was up, we worked this goose for what seemed like forever and finally, I got the call to take him. Well, my gun got caught up on my coat for a split second in the meantime I swear this gooses toes were about to touch the water. I knew Jake was itching to shoot this goose too so I knew I had to get my shot off before him. Fortunately, I was able to free my gun and drop my goose before he did.
I can sum up the next 3 days, yes I said 3 days in a couple of words. They were there, we set up there, they didn't come back there, no shots fired there. However, I will say we are becoming quite proficient at putting out and picking up decoys.

By the way, I do realize my bird to pic ratio is much more skewed this year and I will really work on that.

Happy New Year....

I hope this post finds you all well and happy at the start of the New Year. All I have to say is, "at least I have a job and my health" because goose hunting has been less than impressive. Monday which was the last day of 2018 goose season it rained all day, so I stayed home and got some work done around the house. Tuesday the first day of the 2019 season and Wednesday the second I went both days to a local lake to try my luck. The lake had a couple hundred geese roosting on it the first day and half that the second. They did the same thing both days- they got up around 9:30 and flew East to West in front of me but out of shotgun range. I waited 'til noon-thirty for their return but it seems they knew I was there and didn't come back 'til after I had left. With the weather being as stale as the birds I'm really hoping beyond hope for a winter push of new birds. Not next week which is also supposed to be another mild one, but maybe sometime before season ends in February. : (
Well, gotta go to work for the next couple days to pay for this extravagant lifestyle I lead. All the while daydreaming about all the geese I want to shoot next week.... #limits
