Tuesday I had to go goose hunting. I've been watching my fields and have not seen very much activity. So I went to a field that I've had good luck at in the past. Well my luck was good but my shooting was not. The first flock of 4 that came in, came in perfect and quite close. I had my full choke in and they were close enough that the pattern didn't have time to open.
I know excuses, excuses.
Anyway, I switched chokes to a Modified so the pattern will open quicker. The next flock of 15 or so birds did not fly so close and I ended up taking 3 shots at marginally out of range birds, so I put the full choke back in.
As I was waiting for more geese I decided, as I often do, that my decoys were not in the right pattern. So I went out and started moving them. As I was moving my decoys around I had 3 geese fly right over me. Fortunately for me I had my shotgun, 3 bangs later and 2 geese lay on the ground. I know I should've had 3, but in my defense this was the first time I have shot my gun in 2 weeks.
So after waiting for that last goose for a while, I decided 2 was good enough.
As I was on my way home I went past a field that was loooaaadddeeedddd with geese. I have tried to get permission on this field in the past but the landowner was never home. I got home unloaded my gear and shot back out to ask to hunt the field. Well surprisingly the landowner was home and I got permission, so now the hunt was on for more guns. I called a couple guys to help shoot this field but no one could get free. So having learned my lesson this year already I was going to shoot it by myself.
So with all the preparations being made I felt confident I would have a fun quick hunt in the morning. So I went to bed only to be awoken a couple hours later by my wife handing me the phone. Apparently the owner did give me permission but the son,who is the one who watches over her and the property, had other ideas. He explained to me that he also hunts and they had a bad experience with some hunters they allowed to hunt, a couple years ago, and now only family is allowed to hunt the property. He apologized for the abrupt revocation of the permission but said that's how it has to be.
So I lost one of the best fields I have seen in a long time before I even hunted it. Just so you can see what I'm talking about here's some pics of the field today. Took these just driving by.
Man were there alot of geese.
Anyway since I didn't have a field for today, I went coon hunting last night. Even though they were really running I only got one, that I didn't even get a pic of.
Pulled my traps today and still the fur vacancy continues. Only one more week of season left before I have to pull them 'til next year.
Well that's what happened this week, hope your week went well.
All my outdoor adventures are put down here for you to see. My goal is to make you smile or maybe even learn something. If you don't, well it's a good read anyway. Wish me luck..... This blog is dedicated to my Auntie Nae and my Mom. They have contributed to this in their own way. Thank you for all you have done and still do. And a special Thanks to my Dad, he started me on my path by having time to take me hunting and fishing. Thank you.

Can't stand it....
I thought with the closure of goose season that I could pick up some extra days coon hunting these 2 weeks. However with the full moon and snow on the ground it is too bright every nite for me.
I was able to get my traps out this week since the creek opened up. But its not the same as hunting, I think I might have to try some coyote hunting this week.
Tomorrow is looking pretty good..... : )

2 week hiatus
Since goose is closed for 2 weeks, set to reopen for me on the 19th of Jan. I have been getting some projects done, mostly to do with my trap line.
I got a dozen more muskrat, mink traps with the cash I got for Christmas. I have been getting them ready to deploy this year before the end of season, but if they're not ready no big deal I will have them for next year. I was never really into trapping until this year. I have set traps to control the coon population around the house, but this year I have expanded my trapping territory. I've got a couple creeks in the area set for muskrat and mink. I have caught a couple muskrat but have yet to catch a mink.
That is until yesterday.
This is my first trapped mink. I've got mink in the past when I was duck hunting, but this one I caught in a trap. I caught him in a 110 conibear set along a weed edge. I was pretty stoked when I saw I had fur, let alone a mink. I've been coming up short on catches the last week or so.
Only about 30 more and all the gear I've had to buy will be paid for. : )
