Come to the Black Hills they said.... It'll be fun they said.... Well, I gotta say both those are true. I did have alot of fun if you can see it through all the work.
I started the second week hunting memories from the first week. I went to all the places I saw or heard birds the first week, only to be greeted with a wall of silence and apparently a cloak of invisibility. That's a fancy way of saying I didn't see or hear anything the first day and a half.
That being said I was walking into my last memory Tuesday night when I saw 2 ladies on horseback coming up the trail from the same way I was going in. A little dejected, I greeted them and they asked if I was turkey hunting to which I replied more like hiking with a gun. I haven't heard or seen a turkey in 2 days. Well they gave me the name of a town that wasn't far, with the promise of hundreds of gobbling turkey's..... I held onto the name finished the small talk wished them a good day and continued to my last spot.... upon setting up and sitting and calling for about a half hour and not hearing anything, I picked up my set and headed out. What have I got to lose? I'm not hearing or seeing anything here, I can not hear or see anything in a new spot.
So, that's what I did I went back to the truck and headed the 45 mins to the new spot. I was kinda weird to just be able to move about so freely without having to pack anything, just go.
THE NEW SPOT

| There were deer everywhere, these ladies greeted me at the new spot |
I found a good place to park up in back of the hill that overlooked the town and went to sleep. The whole night was filled with lightning, thunder, rain and wind. My alarm went off early, I hit snooze because of the rain. I didn't get out of the truck until 5am, when I did I was met with early gobbles.
I pinned it on the phone and headed out to try and set up within 100 yards or so. Come to find out my distance was wrong and 100 yards was back at the truck, I ended up 30 yards from the roosted birds who knew there was something in the trail but couldn't figure out what. I was able to slowly sit down by a tree on the edge of the trail and they calmed down and started preening. As soon as the forest started to get light I knew I was not in the right spot. Straight across from me there was a grass path that went up the hill, I knew that's where they were going to pitch to. Unfortunately I was right, after the 4 hens and the gobbler pitched down and walked out of my life. I started hearing a couple other turkey's back up tword the truck. So I headed out to set up on the another bird. I heard this bird out in a clearing and it sounded to me like he was coming my way so I backed into the woods 40 yards or so and set up. He answered to me about every other call, so I waited, he gobbled, as if he passed me. After I called again he was going back the same way I first heard him calling from. Time to move....
Come to find out I moved on this bird 3x's only to be left behind when he found some real hens. All I could do was call and listen to where he and his girls went up the hill. After figuring out the best way to get to the top of the hill as sneakily as possible, I was off. It probably took me an hour to get to the top of the hill. When I was able to see over the edge I slowed and looked for birds. I saw nothing so I took another step to get a better look and... There he was running away from me and there I was in utter shock that I caught up to him.... I didn't even raise my gun... I just watched him run across the top and out of my li.... crap 2 hens. Now I was able to snap out of it and raised my gun looking for another bird. Then I saw the last bird running away in range and in my sights... the only thing was I wasn't sure if it was a Tom or a hen so I had to let it run out of my life also.
So, what I'll say is that was the best chance I had in my second trip to the Black Hills. I saw 14 birds that first day and had heard 5 or 6 gobbling that morning and throughout the day. That's more birds than the rest of both trips combined, even though I didn't get one and through all the work it was a really fun time. The best news is I get to keep going back out until I get my Merriams.
What I will say is on May 15th they open all the closed motorized trails up and it's possible to run most of the hills.
It is really beautiful country and worth a trip just to see it.
I doubt if I'll get back next year but I'll keep trying until I'm able.
